# What Is Gritlands? Game Overview, Premise, and Goals

> Discover the premise, core activities, and long-term goals of Gritlands — from a lakeside tent to a penthouse on top of Grit Tower.

Gritlands is an online persistent world where you start at rock bottom and build your way to the top of a broken city. It sits at the crossroads of life-sim, survival game, and player-driven trading economy — with a turf-war layer waiting for you once you've found your footing. Nothing is handed to you, every resource in the world is finite and contested, and every rung you climb is visible to every other player on the server.

## The setup

One bad week took everything: your relationship and your apartment. The only person who answered the phone was your **Uncle Roger**, who lives out at **Grit Lake** on the rural fringe of the Gritlands. He wired you a bus ticket, and you showed up with a duffel bag and nothing else.

Roger can't give you money — nobody out here really has any. What he can do is stake you a tent, hand you some tools, and point you toward the lake. From that moment on, every dollar in your pocket and every roof over your head is something you built yourself.

## What you actually do

The day-to-day of Gritlands breaks down into four overlapping activities. You'll touch all of them in your first session and keep coming back to each one throughout the game.

    Fish the lake, chop timber, mine stone and ore, and scavenge scrap from the wasteland. Raw materials are the foundation of the entire economy — everything else starts here.

  <Card title="Craft and Trade" icon="hammer">
    Turn raw materials into food, ammo, tools, and gear. Sell finished goods to other players who need them, and buy what you can't make yourself. This is how CASH circulates.

  <Card title="Fight and Explore" icon="crosshairs">
    Learn to handle yourself with a pipe wrench, then push deeper. The Drains beneath the city hold the best loot in the game — and the only encounters where another player can take what you're carrying.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Climb" icon="building">
    Better housing, better gear, a better look, a bigger crew. Every upgrade you make is persistent and public. The city skyline you see from Grit Lake on day one is the destination.

## The goal

There is a finish line, and it's visible from your very first minute in the game. Grit Tower rises above Grit City on the far side of the water. A penthouse at the top of that tower — with your name on the door — is the long-term goal. The path there runs through four milestones.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Get on Your Feet">
    Survive your first sessions, learn the gathering and selling loop, and move from a tent at the lake to a rented place in Millside. This is where Gritlands teaches you its rules.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Make It in the City">
    Develop real crafting skills and own your first piece of property inside Grit City. Now you're a permanent resident, not just a visitor.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Own the Top">
    Accumulate the wealth and reputation to claim a penthouse in Grit Tower — the exact tower you could see from the dock on the day you arrived. This is the summit.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Build a Crew">
    Friends become a crew. A crew claims territory. Territory generates income and influence. That's where the late game is headed, and it's always in motion.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  You don't need any knowledge of crypto or blockchain to play Gritlands. The game works like a game — gather things, sell things, climb the ladder. If you're curious about \$GRIT and how real-world value flows through the economy, [the economy section explains it](/economy/cash-and-stick) — but that can wait until you're ready.
