# The Fence: The Only Source of New CASH in Gritlands

> The Fence is the only source of new CASH in Gritlands. Learn how it works, where to find nodes, and how to earn the most from every haul you bring in.

The Fence is the trader network that turns raw goods into folding money — and it is the only place new CASH enters Gritlands. Every piece of ore, every fish, every plank you pull out of the world has a guaranteed buyer here. Understanding how the Fence works, and how to squeeze the most out of it, is one of the most important things you can do in your first few hours.

## How it works

Bring raw resources — wood, stone, ore, fish, scrap, components — to any Fence node. The Fence takes them and hands you CASH. The goods leave the world; the CASH is freshly minted. That is the entire transaction.

Your first Fence node is **Sal's general store** at Grit Lake. Sal buys almost anything raw at a fair starting rate. As you travel further out, you will find Fence nodes with progressively better payouts — the **Ironrow Docks** offer the best rates in the game for bulk hauls.

<Info>
  Look for the **balance scale** on Sal's counter. Selling to the Fence is literally the act of weighing your goods against a price. That scale is the single most important piece of furniture in your early game — walk up to it and use it.

## Two ways to earn

The Fence offers two payout modes, and knowing when to use each one can meaningfully change how much CASH you walk away with.

    Always available, no waiting required. Walk up to any Fence node, sell your goods, collect CASH on the spot. There is a soft cap on how much you can pull this way in a given stretch, but it is your reliable everyday baseline.

    Every so often the whole server pools resources toward a shared community goal. Contribute during an active cycle and the Fence pays out at a boosted rate for everyone who chipped in. This is the best CASH-per-item the game offers — watch for the notification and plan your big sells around it.

## Why only one source?

It might seem odd that the game does not give CASH from quests, daily boards, or login bonuses. The design is intentional, and it works in your favour.

<Steps>
  <Step title="One tap in means stable prices">
    When CASH enters the world through only one door, the total supply stays controlled. That means what you earn today actually buys something tomorrow — no runaway inflation.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Your goods always have a buyer">
    No matter how saturated the player marketplace gets, the Fence will always take your raw materials. There is a hard floor under everything you gather. You are never stuck.
  </Step>

  <Step title="No shortcuts that wreck the economy">
    Games that hand out currency through quests and daily rewards tend to inflate until earnings feel meaningless. Gritlands keeps the one door so your grind retains its value.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Quests, daily boards, and events reward you with **XP, items, and resources** — never CASH directly. Those resources are yours to sell at the Fence, so a great quest haul still turns into money. It just goes through the one door like everything else.
</Note>

## Getting the most out of it

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Sell raw, or craft first?">
    The Fence is your guaranteed price floor — you will always get *something* for raw materials. But crafting those materials into finished goods that players want, then selling on GritBay, usually earns significantly more. Use the Fence when you need CASH fast or are hauling things nobody wants to craft. Use crafting for your upside. [More on crafting →](/economy/crafting)

  <Accordion title="Where should I sell?">
    Higher-tier Fence nodes pay better rates than Sal. Early on, Sal is completely fine — the trip to a distant node would eat your time. Once you are hauling serious weight and have reliable transport, the Ironrow Docks pay the best of anywhere and the journey earns its keep. Match your selling destination to the size of your haul.

  <Accordion title="Should I wait for the community cycle?">
    If you are sitting on a large stockpile and a community cycle is active — or the progress bar looks close — holding your goods for the boosted rate can be well worth it. For routine day-to-day selling, do not overthink it. Sell when you have things to sell and CASH is what you need.
